Todd Coggins and Steve Burnich both went 4-for-5 to lead the UNC Asheville to a 12-5 victory over the Western Carolina Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field. UNCA improves to 22-24, while WCU falls to 19-27.
The game was a back-and-forth affair through the first four and a half innings with the game tied at 2-2. However, the Bulldogs scored two in the fifth, five in the sixth and three in the eighth to secure the win.
The Cats got on the board first in the top of the second to make the score 1-0. Brian Sigmon doubled to left field to start the inning off. One batter later, Dustin Penland singled to plate Sigmon.
The Bulldogs answered back in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1. Coggins hit a lead off homerun, and the next batter, Nick Jaska, singled into left. Two batters later Burnich singled to move Jaska to second. A sacrifice fly by Ben Padgett drove in Jaska. On the play, Burnich was thrown out at third to end the threat.
Western scored one run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Penland singled into left field. Brandon Zollman reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt and Penland advanced to third on a throwing error. Todd Roper followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Penland.
In the bottom of the fifth, UNCA scored two runs to make the score 4-2. Matt Roberts was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off. Charles Pippitt doubled into right to score Roberts. Pippitt moved to third on a groundout by Williams and scored on a double by Jaska.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs put the game out of reach with five runs on six hits to make the score 9-2. Burnich led the inning off with a single and Padgett followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Roberts moved Burnich and Padgett to second and third. Pippitt brought home the two runners with a single to second base. David Williams got on base with a single and a walk by Sherman loaded the bases. Coggins hit one up the middle to plate Pippitt and Williams and put runners on first and second. Coyle singled into left field to score Sherman.
The Catamounts got a run on the board in the top of the seventh to make the score 9-3. Roper led off with a single through the left side. Chris Davis
followed with a single up the middle to move Roper to runners on the corners. Jared Greenwood
singled into left center to plate Roper.
UNCA extended their lead to 12-3, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Sherman started the inning off with a walk, moved to second on a Coggins and Jaska walked to load the bases. Coyle brought home Sherman with a sacrifice fly to left. The next batter, Burnich doubled to drive in Coggin and move Jaska to third. Padgett followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Jaska.
Coggins, who drove in three, and Bernich combined for eight of the Bulldogs 20 hits. Davis led the way for the Cats going 3-for-4, while Greenwood, Roper, Sigmon and Penland each had two hits.
Brian Barnes suffered the loss for the Catamounts, falling to 3-4. The junior gave up two runs on five hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Aaron Rembert (7-6) picked up the win for UNCA, pitching seven innings and giving up nine hits and three runs.
The Catamounts turn around to host UNCA on Wednesday (May 11). The game is scheduled to start at 7 pm at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.
