Freshman third baseman Scott Schade's two-out single scoring Trent Pratt in the sixth inning proved to be the winning run as Auburn, ranked 11th by Baseball America, edged Western Carolina, 4-2, Saturday at Plainsman Park.
Auburn got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Gabe Gross scored the first run of the game on a Hayden Gliemmo's one-out ground out to first. Schade then delivered a two-out single to score Pratt.
Western Carolina tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth. Rod Goldston's one-out double to right field scored Todd Roper, who led the Catamounts with two hits. Alan Beck tied the game on Donovan Minero's sacrifice fly.
Auburn took the lead for good in the bottom half of the sixth. Pratt began the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brent Burnham grounded out to advance Pratt to third. Pratt would score on Schade's second RBI single of the day. The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth when John Tyler singled home Bobby Huddleston, who reached on a double.
Auburn starting pitcher Lavele Speigner (1-0) earned the victory, giving up seven hits, two earned runs and zero walks, while striking out four in seven innings. Tiger reliever Brandon Luna pitched the final two innings to get his first save of the season. Catamount starter Jared Burton did not factor in the decision, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs and two walks. WCU's Joe Camac got the loss, pitching one inning and giving up a walk and an earned run.
