Western Carolina Wins SoCon Series over Davidson
Cody Jones went 3-for-3 and Bradley Strong drove in three runs as Western Carolina downed Davidson, 5-3, on Sunday.
2011 (Redshirt Junior): Made 11 appearances on the season including nine out of the bullpen with two starts on the mound that bookended his season ... Saw limited action, accounting for just 8.1 innings pitched ... Struck out nine batters against eight walks on the year ... Seven of the 14 base hits he allowed went for extra bases including four doubles and three homeruns as opponents hit .389 against him on the year ... His first appearance on the year was in the starting role against UNC Asheville (March 16), lasting just 2.2 innings while allowing one run on two hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout ... Struck out a season-high four at Furman (May 15).
2010 (Redshirt Sophomore): In his first full season in the WCU pitching rotation, made 20 appearances including 10 consecutive starts to begin the season before finishing with 10 relief appearances ... Opened the season as a starter before moving to the bullpen as a situational left-handed reliever ... Posted a 3-4 overall record with 48.2 innings pitched including his first career complete game - working all nine-innings of a 5-4 win over Eastern Kentucky, limiting the Colonels to four runs on four hits with three walks against four strikeouts ... The longest he worked out of the bullpen was one inning, three times ... Finished with 36 strikeouts including a career-high seven against Wofford to rank fifth on staff ... 2009 (Redshirt Freshman): Spent the majority of the season rehabbing his throwing elbow and was not medically eligible to return until near the season's end ... Made one relief appearance on the year, throwing 15 pitches in a third of an inning's work ... He allowed one hit, three earned runs and one walk in his lone appearance.
2008 (Freshman): Made two appearances before re-aggravating a season-ending elbow injury that required surgery ... Took a medical red-shirt and underwent Tommy Johns' surgery on his pitching (left) elbow ... Posted a 3.86 ERA as a rookie in 4.2 innings of work ... Made his collegiate debut at Vanderbilt, tossing two-thirds of an inning with a walk and strikeout in scoreless, hitless relief ... Recorded his first collegiate start on March 17, 2008, against Hartford at home, working four innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
High School: Led his Scotland HS team to a State Championship win as a junior, becoming only the second team from the school to win a baseball state title ... During his senior season, won the Defensive MVP and the Most Valuable Pitcher awards ... Was named to the All-Mid-Southeastern Conference team after batting .301 with 21 RBIs and seven stolen bases, as well as going 7-3 with a 2.73 ERA and 82 strikeouts on the mound ... Also played three years on the football team, helping the squad reach the second round of the state playoffs as a junior.
