WCU scheduled for five games this week, four in Cullowhee

J.P. Burwell is in his second season as an assistant with Western Carolina. The Asheville, N.C., native has returned to his alma mater to seek his master?s degree in physical education after a two-year hiatus from the game.

In addition to instructing the catchers, Burwell will serve as the first base coach this season, while assisting in recruiting.

Burwell is a 1997 WCU graduate and enjoyed a stellar career while with the Catamounts.

As a senior, Burwell was an All-Southern Conference selection, as well as ABCA All-Atlantic Region. He additionally played a key role in the Catamounts winning the 1997 SoCon Tournament title, as he was named its Most Valuable Player. He was a second team All-Southern Conference selection as a sophomore (1995), throwing out 33 percent of opposing base runners. Upon graduation, Burwell spent one season in professional baseball with the Canton Crocodiles.
