Fifteen student-athletes graduated with honors as 41 walked across the stage to earn their degrees from Western Carolina.


Catamounts Claim Series on Senior Day

Dykota Spiess broke a 6-6 tie with a three-run home run to lead the Catamounts to a 9-7 win over No. 24 Appalachian State to claim the series.

Notes: Originally came to Western Carolina to play catcher for the WCU baseball team ... Participated in Track & Field for the Catamounts for two seasons before walking on to the WCU baseball team as a pitcher during the fall of 2010.

2012 (Senior): Saw action in 18 relief appearances, tossing 15.2 innings on the season with a 3.45 ERA ... Struck out 15 batters against 12 walks, limiting opposing hitters to just a .237 batting average against ... Of the 14 hits he allowed, only four went for extra bases ... Did not allow an extra base hit until his eighth outing of the year ... Went through is first seven seasonal appearances - and a combed 6.2 innings - before allowing a run ... Twice matched a career-high with three strikeouts in a game, doing so against Kennesaw State (March 27) and again against Samford (May 23) in the Southern Conference Tournament ... While nursing a forearm strain, came on as a pinch runner six times, scoring twice.

2011 (Junior): Made 11 appearances including 10 out of the bullpen and one start, tossing an inning and two thirds at High Point (April 26) ... Pitched 10.1 innings, striking out 11 against six walks ... Recorded strikeouts in seven of his 11 appearances ... Finished with a 3.48 ERA ... Did not allow an earned run in his first five appearances ... Struck out a career-best three in two innings of relief work at Clemson (April 6) ... Of the 14 hits he allowed, only three were for extra bases.

High School: Three-year letterman for coach Ronnie Pruitt at Ashe County HS...Two-time All-Mountain Valley Athletic Conference team member ... Won team MVP award as a junior and as a senior ... Twice had the highest season batting average on team ... Won the ACHS Coach's Award as a junior.
