Cullowhee, N.C. - As the end of the 2016-17 fiscal year rapidly approaches on June 30, Western Carolina University Athletics and its fundraising arm, the Catamount Club, continue to strive to reach the goal of a record-setting $1.5 million to support WCU student-athlete scholarships.
The Catamount Club and WCU student-athletes need your help by renewing -- and encouraging new members to be involved -- for the 2017-18 membership year by June 30 in order to reach this unprecedented goal. All contributions made to the Catamount Club are tax deductible and directly impact scholarships that support each of WCU's 16 intercollegiate athletic teams.
Current Catamount Club members are asked to renew their memberships, and WCU alum, fans, and supporters are encouraged to join by June 30 to invest in the future of Western Carolina student-athletes lives. Doing so by the end of the month ensures that donors receive membership benefits including 2017 football game day parking and access to game day hospitality events.
For any questions about joining the Catamount Club, renewing or upgrading current memberships, please contact a member of the Catamount Club staff at (828) 227-3047 or by E-mail at email@example.com. Members wishing to contribute by credit card are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to allow for crediting by the June 30 deadline.
Also, returning Catamount Football season ticket holders are reminded that the deadline to lock in their same seats for the 2017 home schedule at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field is this Friday, June 30.
Season tickets for all five home dates of Western Carolina's 2017 football season are on sale now through the WCU Athletics Ticket Office, located on the first floor of the Ramsey Center and online at CatamountSports.com. Fans can also call the ticket office toll free at (800) 34-GOWCU or (828) 227-2401. Purchasing season tickets allows fans a chance to secure tickets before single-game ticket sales begin in early August. Fans can also be a part of the Catamount road team by purchasing tickets for away games through the WCU Athletics Ticket Office, securing seats in the Western Carolina sections at opposing team stadiums.
Led by All-America all-purpose back Detrez Newsome, who is coming off of back-to-back, 1,000-yard rushing seasons, Western Carolina returns a bulk of its offensive production from a season ago including nine starters and 27 of the team's 32 offensive touchdowns. Newsome found the end zone 10 times on the ground and added four TD receptions and a heart-stopping kickoff return for a score at SEC-foe, South Carolina, in 2016.
He is flanked by the returning SoCon Freshman of the Year in quarterback Tyrie Adams with three of the team's top five receivers from last year returning, including redshirt senior Terryon Robinson who recorded 71 catches for 738 yards and six touchdowns in 2016.
The Catamount defensive unit returns with renewed vigor under new coordinator, veteran coach John Wiley. All told, WCU returns four defenders who posted 60-or-more tackles a season ago including all-conference candidates in seniors Keion Crossen and Kendall White, as well as redshirt senior LB Daniel Riddle who is returning from an injury that slowed his production a year ago. That defensive unit is joined by all-conference -- and preseason Athlon Sports All-America punter -- Ian Berryman, on special teams.
Western Carolina's football student-athletes officially report to campus for the 2017 fall camp on Monday, July 31 with practice opening on Tuesday, Aug. 1 with the first of two acclimation period, helmet-only sessions. WCU's first day in full pads in the fall is slated for Saturday, Aug. 5.
