Oct. 22, 2002

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina cross country runner Caleb Bailey has been named the Southern Conference Runner of the Week for the week of Oct. 14. Bailey joins teammate Ben Watkins who received the same honor on Sept. 10.

Bailey , a junior at WCU, outleaned Jesse Norman at the finish line (both timed in 17:38) to win the individual title at The Western Open XC Invitational on Friday, Oct. 18 over the 6K course. Bailey's efforts were huge as he closed a gap of about 100m in the last 400m of the race. He also led WCU to a close second place overall team finish behind Appalachian State (30-31) and his efforts led Western Carolina to it's first ever dual meet win over ASU in the battle for the Old Mountain Jug (27-30 in head-to-head competition).

The Catamounts are currently in preparations for the Southern Conference Intercollegiate Championships, which will be held on Nov. 2 in Charleston, S.C.
