Sept. 8, 2016

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina first-year head coach Cale McDaniel announced the addition of Austin Davis to his coaching staff as he forms his first leadership team for the Western Carolina cross country and track & field programs. Davis most recently served as an assistant coach at Davidson College.

"We are very excited to add Austin to our staff,” said McDaniel. “He has built a great reputation in our field, and I know he will bring a wealth of knowledge to our program. Austin will be coaching the sprint/hurdle group, along with the horizontal jumps. We are very lucky to have Austin at WCU, and we are excited to get started."

Davis joined the Davidson coaching staff in April of 2016 where he worked with the sprints, jumps, hurdles and throws.

Prior to his time at Davidson he spent one season as a volunteer coach at UNC system’s main campus in Chapel Hill working with the men’s and women’s track & field teams. He worked closely with the multis, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, hurdles and sprints. Davis also spent time as a volunteer coach at UNC in 2012 as well. Throughout his time as a coach at UNC, Davis helped three student-athletes earn ACC Championships while 25 scored at the ACC Championships. Thirteen of his athletes qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round while five went on to the National Championships.

His longest tenure came at Winston-Salem State University where he served as an assistant coach for both the cross country and track & field programs. While at WSSU, he worked with nearly all the events while providing technical expertise as well as strength and conditioning programs. He coached 12 CIAA scorers and 25 all-conference performances. Five of his athletes earned conference MVP awards while three earned NCAA qualifying marks. Those athletes went on to earn eight NCAA All-American honors including Tajanel McNeill who went from a walk-on to a five-time CIAA MVP winner and four-time All-American. He helped coach the 4x100m relay team who went on to capture back-to-back second place finishes at the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships.

Davis holds three USA Track & Field Coaching Certifications including Level 1, Level 2 youth and Level 2 jumps.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science-sport administration with a minor in coaching. While attending UNC, he was a two-time NCAA All-American in the triple jump and earned the 2009 ACC Championship in that same event. He was a six-time recipient of All-ACC honors and holds the UNC Indoor record for the triple jump.
