Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Stephen Hammond was selected as the Southern Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, announced today by the conference office.
Hammond, a junior honor roll student majoring in physical education, won the Western Carolina Open 5K with a time of 15:50. The win was Hammond's first collegiate cross country individual win and came with the temperature hovering around 85 degrees and high humidity.
Hammond led the Catamounts to an opening win by a 34 to 37 team margin over UNC-Asheville that also included a field of Gardner Webb, King College, Newberry College, and Warren Wilson College.
Western returns to action on Saturday Sept. 20 as they host the Catamount Classic here in Cullowhee, N.C. The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
