CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams are ready to open the 2017 season by hosting the WCU Cross Country Festival Saturday, Sept. 2. The Catamounts will welcome in six women’s and five men’s teams Saturday morning for the 9:30 a.m., start. The festival will also feature high school and middle school races.
Emory & Henry, Gardner-Webb, Georgia, King and Milligan will all be sending both the men’s and women’s programs to Cullowhee this Saturday while Brenau will be competing in the women’s race.
The women will run a two mile race beginning at 9:30 a.m., while the men take to the 5K course at 10 a.m.
Both the Catamount men’s and women’s programs finished second at last season’s event but the reigning champions of both sides are not returning in 2017. UNC Asheville took the men’s race a season ago while the College of Charleston took home the women’s crown. Individually, Justin Tucker is WCU’s top returning male runner as he finished eighth overall last season while Kaitlyn Lingard returns for the women after finishing fourth.
The Western Carolina men and women were recently predicted to finish seventh in the Southern Conference with the release of the 2017 Cross Country Preseason Polls as selected by the SoCon head coaches. The Furman Paladins were selected to repeat as SoCon Champions on both the men’s and women’s sides.
Live results of the meet will be available on CatamountSports.com with a full recap following all the action Saturday afternoon.
