Catamounts Cross Country Opens Season Tonight With Western Carolina Open Starting At 5:30

Aug. 29, 2008

Cullowhee, NC- The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams will look to open the season with a solid start tonight when they play host to the Western Carolina Open at 5:30.

The women's team will build off of last year's team with all the runners returning except for one. Seniors Skye Aiello, Megan Isaacs, and Leah Nicholson will look to provide leadership for the rest of the group.

Head Coach Danny Williamson hopes his team will have plenty of motivation to success this season. "We feel we have a pretty solid group this season. We have great leadership from several of our ladies, and they understand what needs to be done in order for us to have the most productive and successful season in WCU history," added Williamson.

Also the women's squad has something very unique about them this season.

"The good thing about this team and something that I really like is that our running positions are interchangeable. What I mean by this is that on any given day our number one runner could be our number four runner and our number five runner could be our number one, said Williamson."

The men's team also has some solid runners returning for them this season. Senior Field Miller and Juniors Stephen Hammond, and Jake Clawson look to carry the load this season. Also Freshmen Josey Weaver has come in and made tremendous effort to show he can contribute very early in his cross country career.

"We have had our best pre-season in a long time with our men's group. We want to use our strengths to perform at a high level as a team, said Coach Williamson.

Race times and Distances for tonight for the Western Carolina Cross Country Open 5:30pm - Women's 2 mile race 6:00pm - Men's 5k (3.1 mile) race Course is located on the lawn of Norton dorm, the village, and the dirt train surrounding the WCU Catamount Track/Soccer/Softball complex.
