Catamounts Cross Country Teams Picked Seventh by Leagues Coaches

Jocelyn King finished finish seventh at the SoCon Championship Meet in 2012 and picked up SoCon Runner of the Week honors on October 17.

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams were both picked to finish seventh in the Southern Conference per the league's head coaches that was released by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.

Furman and UNCG tied top spot on the men's side with 73 points each, while Elon was selected as number one on the women's side with 93 points.

Led by top returner and junior Jocelyn Keen, who earned All-Southern Conference after a seventh place finish with a time of 17:51.80, the women's team took sixth place at the SoCon Championship Meet in 2012. Keen was also named SoCon Runner of the Week on October 17 after a fifth place finish at the Royals XC Challenge with time of 17:46.80 - the second fastest time in school history at the time of the race. Junior Aleshia Reese returns after posting a top-25 finish, 21st, at last year's SoCon meet with a time of 18:19.79. The Catamounts did lose Mara Smith to graduation. Smith was a two-time All-SoCon runner after finishing fourth with a time of 17:35.92 at last year's championship meet

The men's team also finished sixth and returns top-25 finisher junior Travis Alfaro, who took 17th with a time of 25:33.45. WCU graduated two top-25 finishers from a season ago in Josey Weaver, who was a three-time All-SoCon runner and finished in 13th place after a time of 25:16.70, and Nolan Clark, 25th place with a time of 25:41.00.

WCU opens the cross country slate with a home meet, the Western Carolina Invitational, on August 30 at 6 p.m. as one of two home meets leading up the SoCon Championship Meet in Birmingham, Ala. on November 2 at 10 a.m. The second home meet, the Catamount Classic, falls on October 4 at 4 p.m.
