The 2001 men's and women's cross country teams will return with the most experience and deepest team in several years of the program's history. Both teams will return all runners along with the added quality of the incoming freshmen.
On the women's side look for good things from senior Holly Bright, juniors Whitney Woods and Melanie Cooper, and sophomores Megan Thacker, Alissa Short and Jerrine Peeler. Cooper led the team as they hosted the North Carolina Intercollegiate last season with a sixth place finish. The sophomore marked a time of 18:55, which ranks eighth in WCU record books.
Additions to the 2001 roster are freshmen Tonya Edmonds, Jessie Stackhouse and Rachel Taylor.
The men will be returning senior Worth Allen, junior Jesse Norman and sophomores Caleb Bailey, Cory McCall, Ben Watkins and Philip Ramsey. Bailey entered the top ten of the WCU record book in an 8K race with a time of 25:20 at the Great American Cross Country Festival. The team's top five last season return after gaining valuable experience after finishing sixth (only two points out of fourth) at the Southern Conference Championship last season. Newcomers to the men's squad are Andy Pruett, James Irwin, and Ryan Crise.
"The newcomers to both teams did great things at the high school level and will provide a great deal of depth," said Head Coach Danny Williamson. "Our main goal is to win the Southern Conference Championship every year. We want our teams to be recognized as the best in the SoCon on a yearly basis."
