CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina men's and women's cross country head coach Cale McDaniel has announced the Catamounts' 2017 season slate which includes a season opening home meet and trips to mountain rivals UNC Asheville and Appalachian State.
The Catamounts will again open the season at home as they host the Western Carolina Cross Country Festival which will feature both college and high school races. The competition will be held Saturday, September 3 in Cullowhee at 9 a.m.
WCU then makes a return trip to former Southern Conference rival Appalachian State two weeks later on Saturday, Sept. 16, for the Mountains to Sea Duals. Just one week later, the Catamounts make their shortest trek of the season for the Asheville Cross Country Invitational.
A Friday night race will be next up as WCU travels east for the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C., hosted by Queens College on Sept. 29.
WCU’s final meet before the 2017 Southern Conference Championship will take place in Kernersville, N.C., as the Catamounts attend the HPU VertCross Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13. Just two weeks later, WCU will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to compete at the Southern Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28.
Following the SoCon Championships, the Catamounts will travel to Earlysville, Va., for the NCAA Southeast Regional Nov. 10 with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships which will be held Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky.
