Howarth Named to the All-Freshman Team, Catamounts Complete SoCon Championship

Birmingham, Ala. - The Western Carolina men's and women's teams finished the Southern Conference Championship meet with the men's team finished in eighth and the women's team taking ninth place.

Freshman Clay Howarth was the only Catamount to earn post-meet honors as he was named to the All-Freshman team for his performance. He is the fourth Catamount men's runner to earn the honors since the SoCon starting recognizing the team in 2008.

Travis Alfaro was the top finisher on the men's side with a time of 25:55.08 to finish in 25th place. Alfaro has finished in the top 25 of every race this season. Howarth finished in 39th after a time of 26:40.54, while classmate JC Cornett completed the 8k course with a time of 27:10.56 in 50th place. Sophomore Jamie Bigby finished in 58th after a time of 27:36.52, and freshman Tommy Connell was the final Catamount runner to have their score counts as he crossed the line 62nd after a time of 27:53.28. Sophomore Cooper Wurst finished three spots behind in 65th with a time of 28:04.77, and sophomore Perry Cabean crossed the line in 69th after a time of 28:32.85. Sophomore Michael Cornwell was the final WCU runner with a time of 29:16.27 in 72nd place.

On the women's side, Aleshia Reese was the Catamount's top finisher with a 36th place finish after a time of 19:10.24 - a season best for the junior. Junior Michelle Provost followed closely behind with a time of 19:20.79 in 41st place, and senior Hayley Tomlinson was five spots behind in 46th place after a time of 19:39.85. Sophomore Mackenzie Jensen and junior Lena Elliott were the final Catamount runners to have their scores count as they finished 58th and 59th after times of 20:38.78 and 20:44.88 respectively. Elliott's time was a season best and her second best time of her career. Freshman Shannon Veilleux completed the 5k course in 63rd after a time of 21:23.72 - a personal best time --, and classmate Julia Metscher was the last WCU runner after a time of 21:45.51 in 66th place.
