SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Western Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams competed for the 2017 Southern Conference Championship Saturday morning in Spartanburg, S.C. Both teams finished seventh in their respective races. Junior Christina Nikolaou was WCU;s top individual finisher as she took 28th in the women’s 5k race with a time of 18:41.3.
The women took seventh out of the 10 team field finishing ahead of Mercer, VMI and The Citadel. Furman repeated as the team champion with just 23 points. Samford finished second while ETSU took third.
The men also competed in a 10 team field as they took seventh. Wofford, The Citadel and Mercer finished behind the Catamounts while Furman repeated as the champion. The Paladins tallied a perfect score of 15 to beat out second place ETSU and third place Samford.
The men were led by junior Jordan Bostian who completed the 8k course in 26:36.8 to take 33rd overall. Sophomore Isaiah Hanna was the next finisher for the Catamounts in 40th as he crossed the line in 26:48.1.
Sophomore Lindsey Trotter and junior Kaitlyn Lingard took second and third on the women’s side for WCU. Trotter turned in a time of 19:04.2 to just edge out Lingard for 39th overall as the junior crossed in 19:04.6.
Sophomore Justin Tucker and junior Harrison Conner came across next for the WCU men. Tucker finished 44th after clocking in at 27:02.6 while Conner finished two spots back in 46th at 27:12.2. The final WCU scorer was sophomore Tyler Robakiewicz who stopped the clock at 27:25.3.
The Catamounts repeated their 2016 finish in which both teams took seventh as well.
