CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's cross country placed sixth in the Southern Conference Championships and the men placed seventh Saturday as the even was held on the Western Carolina campus. Senior Kerrie Savery received Southern Conference First Team All-Conference honors.
Savery's ninth place finish earned her all-conference honors as the top 10 finishers in the race receive the honor. She clocked in a career-best time of 18:26.34, which was also the fifth-best time in school history.
In all, the Catamount women posted three season-best times in the event. Junior Megan Issacs ran a season-best time of 18:48.63 and placed 22nd. Annie Bailey's season-best time of 19:44.27 was good for 50th place and Leah Nicholson's time of 20:11.26 gave her 63rd and was also a season-best.
As a team, Western Carolina women had 141 points in the meet and placed behind Elon who finished fifth with 104 points. Chattanooga women won the event with a score of 44. Davidson was runner-up scoring 53 points.
The WCU men scored 158 points for their seventh place finish, six points behind Elon who placed sixth. Appalachian State won the meet with a total team score of 27. Chattanooga was second with 56 points.
Catamount sophomore Stephen Hammond was the top finisher for the men, placing 12th with a time of 25:51.64. The next best finisher was Jesse Ramirez who clocked in a season-best time of 26:50.96.
