ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams both took second at the College of Charleston Classic Friday evening. The event was moved to Winthrop University after weather made two separate courses in the Charleston area unusable. Men's freshman runner Liam Brooks took the overall spot in the 8K race as he bested all his competition by completed the course in 25:54.5. On the women's side it was freshman Kaitlyn Lingard leading the way as she finished second overall with a time of 18:41.7 on the 5K course.
College of Charleston took top honors in both team events. The Catamount men finished just four points behind the Cougars as all five Catamount scorers finished in the overall top-19. The women did not come as close as they fell by 39 points to the Cougars despite having all five scorers within the top-21.
Junior JC Cornett picked up a top-five finish for the men as he placed fifth overall after crossing the line in 26:40.5. WCU's third finisher was freshman Jordan Bostian who clocked a time of 27:08.6 which placed him 12th.
The men defeated fellow Southern Conference members The Citadel (3rd) and Wofford (4th).
Coming across second for the women was freshman Emma Hand who placed ninth overall with a time of 19:18.7. Sophomore Madison Goode was next in line after stopping the clock at 19:26.2 which earned her 12th in the race.
The women also defeated Wofford (6th) and The Citadel (7th) in route to their second place finish.
The women's final two scorers were senior Kaitlyn Shetler and freshman Jada Blake. Shetler finished 16th overall with a time of 19:41.7 while Blake crossed the line in 21st after clocking in at 19:45.8. Freshman Trinity Wiles just missed out on the scoring five as she came in one second behind Blake at 19:46.8.
The Catamounts will now turn their attention to the 2015 Southern Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31. The event will be held at Furman University.
