SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams were in action Saturday morning at the USC Upstate Invitational. The women finished fifth out of a field of 13 while the men took sixth in their race out of 13.
Freshman Kaitlyn Lingard once again led the Catamount women as she finished sixth overall in the field with a time of 18:45.69 over the 5K distance. Sophomore Laney Browder came across next for the Catamounts in 25th overall with a time of 19:34.77.
As a team the Catamounts finished ahead of Southern Conference members Wofford (7th) and The Citadel (9th). Appalachian State, High Point and Florida Gulf Coast stood at the top of the podium following the event.
For the men it was freshman Liam Brooks leading the pack as he placed 15th overall with a time of 26:27.02. Junior JC Cornett crossed next for the Catamounts as he placed 19th overall with a time of 26:37.99.
As a team the Catamounts finished ahead of Southern Conference members The Citadel (7th) and Wofford (8th). High Point, Appalachian State and Liberty stood at the top of the podium following the event.
The rest of the men's scoring five consisted of freshman Caleb Albrecht who placed 40th overall with a time of 27:57.92. Senior Jamie Bigby came across next in 42nd after stopping the clock at 28:00.87. The fifth finisher for WCU was freshman Jordan Kokoska who crossed the line in 45th with a time of 28:12.21.
The women's scoring five was rounded out by sophomore Madison Goode, senior Kaitlyn Shetler and freshman Christina Nikolaou. Goode placed 29th overall with a time of 19:45.14 while Shetler came in 35th after crossing the line in 19:59.13. Nikolaou just missed out on breaking the 20 minute mark as she came in 36th with a time of 20:03.24.
The Catamounts will take one week off before returning to action Friday, Oct. 16 at the College of Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C.
