Cross Country Competes in Great American Cross Country Festival

Charlotte, N.C. - The Western Carolina cross country team broke several personal best times in the Great American Cross Country Festival hosted by UNC Charlotte September 22-23.

Leading the way for the men's team was freshman Caleb Bailey. Bailey placed 35th overall, however, he set his personal best time of 25:20 in the 8K. His time also places him in the top ten in WCU record books for an 8K race. Close behind Bailey, was sophomore Jesse Norman who placed 62nd with a time of 26:04.

The men placed 16th of 20 teams overall. The men and women raced against nationally ranked, Michigan State, NC State, Duke, Georgetown and Brigham Young on the women's side.

The women's team placed 13 of 20 teams with sophomore Whitney Woods setting her personal best and leading the way for the Lady Cats despite a 73rd place finish. She marked a time of 19:04 in the 5000 meter run, placing her 14th in WCU record books.

Woods was followed by junior Holly Bright with a time of 19:15, and sophomore Melanie Cooper with a time of 19:33. Freshman Vanita Carlson placed in the top 30 individual bests for WCU with a time of 20:06.

WCU's women will look to win the battle for the Mountain Jug for the second year in a row this weekend at Appalachian State, September 29th. The men's team is looking to bring the jug back to Western after losing to Appalachian State last year.
