Cullowhee, N.C. - The Catamounts men's and women's cross country teams both finished in second place in hosting the Catamount Classic Saturday morning.
.The men's team placed all five runners in the top 15 in the first race of the day, with junior Stephen Hammond bring home top team honors with a third place finish and a time of 25:26.43. Freshman Josey Weaver came in 10th place (26:13.76) and teammate sophomore Stephen Roach came in 13th (26:36.24). The Catamounts top six runners all ran personal bests in the meet.
The women's team also placed all five runners in the top 15, with senior Megan Isaacs finishing in sixth place to take home top team honors with a time of 18:32.91. Sophomore Jordan Gaddy and junior Lindsay Groce came in ninth and 10th places, respectively, barely 14 seconds apart.
The Georgia Bulldogs took home the men's title thanks to a first and second finish by their top two runners. Ross Ridgewell took home first in the individual honors with teammate Caleb Vogt coming in second by three seconds.
"We knew Georgia coming into the meet was going to be tough with them being ranked in the top 15 in the rankings," said Catamount head coach Danny Williamson. "On the men's side our top six ran personal bests and you can't ask for much more," Williamson said.
The Bulldogs also won the women's title with a perfect 1-2-3-4-5 finish, with senior Natalie Picchetti coming in first place to take home top individual honors for the day with a time of 17:53.00. Teammate Kristie Krueger came in second place, by just two seconds.
"Our top five women's runners ran personal bests today," said Coach Williamson. "The competition sets us up for success later this season in the Southern Conference," Williamson said.
Georgia finished with 15 points to take first place for the women's title, followed by the Catamounts finishing in second place (48 Points), followed by Gardner-Webb (83), and finally Savannah College of Art & Design (113).
Georgia's men's team finished in first place with 18 points, followed by Western Carolina finishing with 47 points in 2nd, followed by Savannah College of Art & Design (90), then finally Gardner Webb (98).
Western returns to action in two weeks, when they travel to Louisville to participate in the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 4 starting at 9 a.m.
