CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams gave head coach Cale McDaniel the first two victories of his young head coaching career Saturday morning as the Catamounts swept the titles at the UNC Asheville Cross Country Invitational. Sophomore Kaitlyn Lingard repeated as individual champion in the women's race after taking the title last season during her freshman campaign.
Lingard completed the 5k course in 18:47.15, outpacing the field by nearly 40 seconds. Sophomore Shawnda Martin was next to cross the line as she took second overall in 19:22.06.
The top male Catamount finisher was sophomore Liam Brooks who won the men's individual title last season. Brooks took third this season with a time of 26:37.60 on the 8k course. Freshman Justin Tucker was WCU's next finisher as he placed sixth overall after crossing the line in 26:54.52.
The women finished with 47 points to out-last second place Wofford who finished with 56 points just topping third place UNC Asheville who came in with 59 points. The men won by 15 points as they finished with 48 points. Fort Wayne finished second with 63 points while Wofford took third at 80 points.
The women's third finisher was sophomore Trinty Wiles who came in 11th overall just missing out on a top-10 finish with a time of 19:59.08. Rounding out WCU's five scorers were junior Madison Goode and freshman Lindsey Trotter who placed 15th and 18th, respectively. Goode completed the course in 20:25.34 while Trotter crossed the finish line in 20:31.31.
The men's final three scorers finished 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively. Sophomore Jordan Bostian was first to cross with a time of 27:26.19 while freshman Tyler Tyler Robakiewicz came in next at 27:27.96. The final scorer was freshman Adam Urbaniuk who turned in a time of 27:30.55.
The Catamounts will next head to Boone, N.C., for the Mountains to Sea Duals on Friday, Sept. 16.
