Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's cross country team placed second in the 2001 Catamount Classic Saturday morning while the women's team placed fourth.

WCU's sophomore Caleb Bailey led the men with a time of 15:06 after trailing Georgia's Mike Swope going into the last mile. Junior Jesse Norman placed sixth for the Cats with a time of 15:35.

University of Georgia won the men's race placing four runners in the top ten. Swope placed second (15:08), Patrick Gavin placed third (15:17), Adam Tribble placed fourth (15:26) and Brian Boyette placed seventh (15:44).

Senior Holly Bright led WCU's women with a time of 13:35 placing eighth. The next three Catamounts placed 17th, 18th and 19th. Sophomores Jerrine Peeler and Alissa Short placed 17th and 18th, respectively, recording times of 13:54 and 13:55. Junior Melanie Cooper came in 19th with a time of 13:56.

Georgia State won the women's race placing its first three runners in the top ten. Jenn Feenstra won the race with a time of 12:21. Brittanie Hughes placed fourth with a time of 13:22 while Nigisti Negussie placed sixth (13:24).

WCU will participate in the Adidas Front Runner Invitational hosted by Chattanooga, September 15.
