Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's cross country team finished in first place, while the women placed second in the Western Carolina Catamount Classic on Saturday. With a team score of 20, the Catamount men edged out Furman, Georgia, East Tennessee, Campbell and Brevard in the 5K race. The Lady Cats finished just short of first in a 4K race with 51 team points behind Georgia. Following Western was Furman, Campbell, East Tennessee, Clemson and Brevard.
The men were led by Caleb Bailey, who took first for the Cats with a time of 15:04. Jesse Norman and Ben Watkins finished second and third at 15:18 and 15:20 respectively, while Adam Puett rounded out the top five with a time of 15:30. Philip Ramsey placed ninth, running the course in 15:36 and James Irwin finished 23rd in 16:25
The women were led by Whitney Woods who finished in fifth with a time of 13:59. Deanna Kulesz (14:20), Tonya Edmonds (14:25), Alissa Short (14:25) and Jerrine Peeler (14:26) came in 10th through 13th, in that order. Megan Kellog placed 33rd, coming in at 15:09 and Becky Signoretti finished in 38th at 15:20. Tammy Ulander (15:35), Randi Miles (15:39) and Jenny Roseboom (15:43) came in 46th, 47th and 49th, respectively.
The team travels to Charlotte, N.C., next for the Great American Cross Country Festival, Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 pm.
