The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams opened their respective seasons winning the WCU Invitational Saturday.
The men were led by race champion Caleb Bailey, who finished the 8K course in 26:14. Western runners to follow placed third, fifth, eighth and ninth to edge Cumberland (Ky.) 26-29. Cumberland's runners placed second, fourth, sixth, seventh and 10th. The field was rounded out by Mars Hill (87), Anderson (123), Tusculum (148) and Oglethorpe (158).
On the women's side, South Carolina's Jenny Lake and Rachel Smith finished the 5K race 1-2 with times of 19:02 and 19:26. However, Western Carolina won the team title, finishing third, seventh, eighth, ninth and 12th individually. The Catamounts were paced by Holly Bright (19:32).
The Catamounts will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 8) when they host the Catamount Classic.
