Behind a personal best in the men's 5K, senior Josey Weaver led the Catamount's men's cross country team to a second place finish in the Western Carolina University Invitational on the Cullowhee campus Friday evening. The women's team placed fourth out of eight teams. Florida won both the men's and women's events.
Weaver paced the Catamounts with his record of 15:21.6 besting his previous time of 15:54.37 when he won the 2009 WCU Invitational. Over his career, Weaver has finished no worse than fifth place in the event.
Florida's Josh Izewski topped all runners with his time of 15:14.1, averaging 4:54.2 per mile. The Gators took four out of the top five spots. The Catamounts put three into the top ten.
Following Weaver, junior Chase Fisher (sixth, 15:37.4) and sophomore Travis Alfaro (seventh, 15:45.0) ran personal bests with senior Nolan Clark (16:01.1) finishing just outside of the top 10 in thirteenth.
On the women's side, senior Mara Smith was the lone Catamount in the top 10 as she placed tenth with her personal best time of 11:51.3. Sophomores Jocelyn Keen (12th, 11:55.6) and Aleshia Reese (15th, 12:07.3) ran impressive top 20, personal bests.
Kaylan Lance ran a 12:35.2 to place 27th as four additional Catamounts placed in the top 40 including Kaitlyn Shetler (34th, 12:52.6), Katana Lemelin (35th, 12:59.4), Lena Elliott (13:01.4) and Hayley Tomlinson (13:02.5).
The men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action as the Catamounts travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Winthrop Invitational on Sat., Sept. 15. Results can be found at CatamountSports.com.
