SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Four Catamounts have been named the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week after their performance at the Appalachian State Invitational on December 5.
Western Carolina's Shalyn McMichael, a junior sprinter, and teammate Tiana Jones, a senior, were named the Southern Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes as decided by the league's coaches. Benny Davis, a sophomore sprinter, and teammate Alex Dollard, a senior, have been named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week.
McMichael, a native of Elgin, S.C., won the 400-meter dash at the Appalachian Invitational on December 5 with a time of 57.53. She also split 56.5 on the lead-off leg of the 4x400-meter relay. The Catamounts went on to take first place in the event.
High Point, N.C., native Jones finished first in the triple jump at the Appalachian Invitational with a combined distance of 39-5.75. She also leaped 17-0.25 in the long jump to place eighth.
Davis, a native of Morganton, N.C., set an indoor personal record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.87 and took second place at the Appalachian Invitational. He also ran the lead-off leg of the 4x400-meter relay with a 48 second split. The Catamounts took second place in the event.
Charlotte, N.C., native Dollard won the long jump at the Appalachian Invitational with a distance of 23' 6". His leap of 45' ¼" in the triple jump was a personal best, and he was the top finisher in the event for Western Carolina.
The Catamounts return to action in 2010 when they compete at the Tar Heel Invitational January 8 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
