Western Carolina Announces 2009-10 Track and Field Schedules

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Track and Field team looks to embark on another championship season as Western Carolina head coach Danny Williamson today released the 2009-10 indoor and outdoor Track and Field Schedules. The Catamounts will participate in 10 indoor events and 10 outdoor events during the 2009-10 season. The indoor season kicks off on December 5 when WCU travels to Boone, N.C., for the Appalachian State Opener. WCU will visit Boone two more times during the indoor season on Jan. 15 and Feb. 18. The Catamounts will also participate in a pair of meets in Blacksburg, Va., as hosted by Virginia Tech on Feb 5-6 and March 6. WCU travels to Clemson, S.C. three times; including regular season meets at the Clemson Games Multi Event on Jan. 29-30, the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 13 and concludes with postseason action at the Southern Conference Championships on Feb. 25-26. Visits to the UNC Invitational (Jan. 8) and the ETSU Niswonger Invitational (Jan. 22-23) will also be part of the indoor season. The indoor year concludes with the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 12-13. The men will look to capture their second consecutive outdoor title after winning the Southern Conference Crown in Statesboro, Ga., last May, while the women will look to improve upon their second place finish in the outdoor events in 2009. The outdoor season kicks off the weekend of March 18-20 where the Cats will participate in either the UNCC 49er Classic, the Wake Forest Invitational or the Clemson Relays. There will be a pair of trips to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jack Invitational on March 27 and the Georgia Tech Invitational (May 14-15). Western Carolina will also participate in the second annual The Mountains vs. The Beaches in Wilmington, N.C. on April 3. Last year, the Catamounts collected 11 victories and 17 podium finishes to help capture the victory for The Mountains, which includes Appalachian State. UNC Wilmington and East Carolina make up The Beaches designation.
WCU will also participate in the Carolina's Cup in Rock Hill, S.C. (April 9) and the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., (April 8-10). The annual WCU Invitational will be hosted on Friday, April 16 at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The 2009 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships will be April 24-25 in Boone, N.C. WCU will participate in the Orange/Purple Classic on May 8 before wrapping up their final meet in Atlanta on May 14-15. The NCAA East Regional will be held in Greensboro, N.C. before the season concludes with the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore. "This schedule allows us to test our abilities against some of best competition, not only regionally but also nationally," noted Williamson. "It will let our athletes see how they stack up against some of the best.We are very excited about the opening of the season as it will give us the opportunity to compete against some other competition other than just lining up against each other on a daily basis." ![]() |
