The return to six meets they competed in last year, including three straight meets at home, highlights the 2007-2008 Western Carolina Track & Field schedule, released today by Head Coach Danny Williamson. The men will be looking for win their third straight Southern Conference Outdoor Championship, while the women will try and improve on their second-place finish from a year ago and win their ninth SoCon title.
The Catamounts are slated to make four appearances in Clemson, S.C. this season, including their trip to the SoCon Indoor Championships Feb.29-March 1. They will also open the season traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., to compete against a number of nationally-ranked teams in the University of North Carolina Invitational.
The indoor season also includes two other trips to ACC schools, when the team goes to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Virginia Tech Last Chance Tournament, the week after the SoCon Championships. The following week, qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championships will compete March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The week after the conclusion of the indoor portion of the schedule, the Catamounts open the outdoor season with a trip to either the Wake Forest Invitational or the Clemson Relays for a high-profile start of the year.
The following week, they will host the first of their four home meets when they put on their fourth-straight Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee. Sandwiched between the Catamount Classic and their three-straight home meets are trips to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Florida Relays, and another venture to Clemson for the Solid Orange Classic.
On April 18, the Catamounts will begin their three-week stay on home turf when they host the Catamount Classic. The following day is the WCU High School Invitational, which welcomes both college and high school teams to Cullowhee for a full day of track and field competition. Then on April 26-27 the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships come to the valley, where the men will try and continue their conference dominance from the past two seasons, and take home the SoCon title at home for the first time.
Following the conference meet, WCU will try and qualify more student-athletes for the NCAAs when they compete in the Orange/Purple Classic in Clemson, S.C., then take part in the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, before beginning NCAA competition.
The NCAA East Regional, to be held on May 30-31, will take place in Tallahassee, Fla., and the NCAA Outdoor Championships will be in Des Moines, Iowa on June 11-14.
