2006-07 Catamount Track & Field Indoor and Outdoor Schedule
Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina head track & field coach Danny Williamson today released the schedules for his 2006-07 Indoor and Outdoor seasons. Williamson, a 20-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year and a three-time regional honoree, will lead the defending SoCon men's indoor and outdoor champion as they try to defend their titles, while also looking to move the women's squad - an eight-time conference champion in their own right - back to the top of the league.
The Catamounts are slated to make four appearances in Clemson, S.C., this winter, including the season-opener on Dec. 1-2 and also at the SoCon Indoor Championships Feb. 17-19. New this season is a trip into western Virginia and the Virginia Tech Invitational Jan. 12-13 in Blacksburg, Va., and WCU will again venture into the Midwest in early February when it competes in the Akron Open on Feb. 1 and 2.
Qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championship will compete March 9-10 at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Facility in Fayetteville, Ark., on the campus of the Univ. of Arkansas.
Less than a week after the conclusion of the indoor schedule, the outdoor season is slated to begin for the Catamounts. Western is scheduled to visit either the Coastal Carolina Invitational or the Charlotte 49er Invitational to open outdoor competition. Sandwiched in the outdoor schedule are two visits to nearby Clemson, with a trip to the Sunshine State and the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
The Catamounts will also host their third-consecutive Western Carolina Invitational at the on-campus Catamount Athletic Complex on the last weekend in March, Friday the 30th and Saturday the 31st.
The Southern Conference championship will be hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., April 21-22. Western will look to return the favor to the rival Mountaineers as ASU won both of the SoCon titles when the event was held in Cullowhee back in 2004. The Catamount men are the defending conference outdoor champions after winning last season in Statesboro, Ga.
Following the conference meet, WCU will try and qualify more student-athletes for the NCAAs - or simply improve the national standing of those already qualified - at the nationally-renowned Penn Relays in Philadelphia, with a trip to Clemson and Georgia Tech also planned prior to the NCAA meets.
The NCAA East Regional will be held in Gainesville, Fla., this year, with the NCAA National Championships again held in Sacramento, Calif. Eight Catamounts all-time, including senior Asia Davis last season, have earned berths to the NCAA Nationals.
