CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina's head track & field coach Cale McDaniel released the 2017-18 Catamount schedule Tuesday (Sept. 12) afternoon. The schedule features five regular season indoor weekends along with six regular season outdoor weekends. The highlight of the 2017-18 slate is the 2018 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships which will be hosted on the Western Carolina University campus at the Catamount Athletic Complex, May 10-11.
The Catamounts open their indoor season Dec. 7-8 at the Appalachian Open hosted by Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Over a month later, the Catamounts will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., for one of two regular season meets at Southern Conference foe ETSU. WCU will compete in the ETSU Track & Field Invitational Jan. 13-15 and the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational Feb. 2-3. Sandwiched between the two ETSU meets, the Catamounts will travel to Lexington, Va., for the SoCon vs. Big South Challenge hosted by VMI Jan. 27. The final regular season event will take place in Huntington, W.Va., at the Thundering Herd Invitational Feb. 10.
The Southern Conference Indoor Championships will take place Feb. 25-26 at a familiar location for the Catamounts as WCU makes its second trip to Lexington, Va., as VMI hosts the event.
The Catamounts will open their outdoor season at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C., March 15-18. After a short break, WCU will travel to Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina for the Weems Baskin Invitational March 23-24.
One week later, WCU travels to Spartanburg, S.C., for the Terrier Relays March 30-31. WCU’s lone regular season home meet takes place April 13-14 as WCU hosts the 2018 Beynon Sports Catamount Classic.
The final two regular season meets will be the Georgia Tech Invitational April 20-21 and the East Tennessee Tri Star Invitational April 28.
The Catamounts will look to sweep the 2018 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships May 10-11 like they did the last time WCU hosted the event in 2016.
