Cullowhee, N.C. - The Southern Conference announced its 2002-03 Academic Honor Roll today, with 105 Western Carolina student-athletes making the list.
The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
The Catamounts had 37 student-athletes post a GPA of 3.5 or better for the 2002-03 academic year, including four student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Those four are Brian Pesci (Football), Yoneko Allen (Women's Basketball), Summer Thagard (Women's Basketball) and Brandy Anderson (Women's Golf).
Western Carolina's student-athletes posted a GPA over 3.0 for the spring semester, improving their cumulative GPA to 3.007 for their careers.
Nearly 1,400 student-athletes from 12 member institutions were named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2002-03 year. The 1,395 names are the second most on the list in league history.
Southern Conference athletic directors established the honor roll prior to the 1988-89 athletic year as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. After 364 earned the honor the first year, the honor roll has increased in 10 of the 13 subsequent years.
