EUGENE, Ore. -
Already heading to London for the 2012 Olympics with the United States’ 4x400m relay team, former WCU track athlete Manteo Mitchell competed in the opening round of the 200m dash today in Eugene, Oregon at historic Haywood Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Running in the fifth and final heat, WCU’s 200m record holder placed second with an all-time personal best 20.47, narrowly finishing behind heat winner Isiah Young of Ole Miss (20.38). Mitchell’s previous best was 20.51 set back in March of this year in Cullowhee. Today’s time was the seventh fastest time with Wallace Spearmon, Jr. pacing the group with his time of 20.17. Calesio Newman and Jeremy Dodson rounded out the top three with matching times of 20.28.
Mitchell advances to tomorrow’s semifinal round with and the other top 18 fastest times that will take place at 9:00 p.m. ET where Mitchell will need to finish in the top eight to make it to Sunday’s final at 7:50 p.m. ET. The top three finishers in the final will advance to compete in the 200m in London. The final will be the last event of the Olympic Trials. Saturday and Sunday’s races can be seen on NBC with coverage starting at 9:00 p.m. ET and 7:00 p.m. ET.
