Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina track and field All-Southern Conference athlete Asia Davis will be competing at the USA Junior Championships in College Station, Texas this Friday and Saturday, June 25-26, in the 400mH. She enters this meet ranked seventh in the nation with a time of 1:00.60. Davis finished third in the SoCon at the Outdoor Championships in May. The Charlotte, N.C., native additionally finished third at the SoCon meet as part of the WCU 4x400 meter relay team.
The USA Junior Championship meet is open to any qualifier under the age of 20. The top eight finishers at the Junior Nationals are declared Junior All-American athletes by USA Track and Field. Also, the highest two finishers that are able to accept the team position will represent the United States at the World Junior Championships in Grosetto, Italy July 13-18, 2004.
Davis is scheduled to run in the preliminaries on Friday at 5:15 pm with the finals being held on Saturday at 6:18 pm. Western's Laura Tieszen was the last Catamount to compete in the USA Juniors Nationals as she participated in the pole vault during her freshman year in 2002. Five other former Catamounts have competed at the national meet, including Caleb Bailey who came away with a spot on the USA Junior National Team that traveled to Canada in the summer of 2000 as he represented the USA in the 1500 meters. Current WCU pole vault coach Ryan Lewis was named a USA Junior All-American in the pole vault during the 1999 championships. Virgina LaCombe competed in the high jump and triple jump in 1999, along with Rosalyn Hood in the long jump and triple jump and Ashley Herendon in the javelin and shot put in the same year.
Davis is one of four athletes from the Southern Conference to qualify for the USA Junior Championships this year. The others include Nicole Browne (Georgia Southern - triple jump), Douglas Noredeen (Davidson - 800 meters) and Jeff Williams (UNC Greensboro - 800 meters).
