Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University track and field standouts Laura Tieszen and NCAA All-American Virginia LaCombe are set to compete against the nation's best this weekend on the campus of Stanford University at the USA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships.

Tieszen, a freshman from Rapid City, S.D., will compete in the women's pole vault at the Junior National level on Saturday, June 22 at 11:00 am Paciffic/2:00 pm EST. Earlier this season at the Knoxville Invitational on the campus of University of Tennessee, Tieszen qualified with a mark of 12' 7.5". The top two athletes in this event will have the opportunity to represent the USA at the World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica on July 16-21.

LaCombe, who recently completed her collegiate eligibility at WCU, will compete at the Senior Championships in the women's high jump on Friday, June 21 at 6:45 pm Paciffic/9:45 pm EST. LaCombe qualified for this meet this past season with her 6-foot jump at the Clemson Orange and Purple Classic. She will be competing against several Olympiads and other top US athletes. Spots will be up for grabs for several international competitions such as the 2002 IAAF World Cup Championships, the NACAC Under-25 Championships and the USA versus Great Britain versus Russia Championships.

"This is a great honor and opportunity for these young women," said WCU head coach Danny Williamson. "(Assistant) Coach Price has done an outstanding job in developing these two athletes in their respective events."
