Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina head cross country and track & field coach, Danny Williamson, was honored today by being named the Southeast District Men's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA). Williamson was one of nine men's head coaches honored by the organization across nine different districts as a total of six different categories were honored - men's and women's coach, men's and women's track athlete, men's and women's field athlete.

The district winners will now be narrowed down to regional honors, as voted upon by his peers, across four different national regions. The USTFCCCA regional award winners will be announced within the next week in preparation for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

During this outdoor season, Williamson's Catamounts added the Southern Conference men's outdoor title to the indoor title they won earlier in the year. Western Carolina led the majority of the SoCon's track performance charts throughout the season, as well as qualified seven men for the NCAA East Regional meet held last weekend in Greensboro.

"This award embodies hard work - hard work from our student-athletes and our entire coaching staff, and it really says a lot about our program," said Williamson.

Earlier this season, Williamson earned the men's indoor track & field Southeast Regional Coach of the Year award after the Catamounts claimed the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship, giving him three regional awards during his career. Williamson has been honored a combined 20 times during his career as the SoCon Coach of the Year between both men and women's indoor and outdoor track & field.
