Cullowhee, N.C. - Senior field athlete Matt Evans has qualified for the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round this weekend, May 27-29, in both the high jump and javelin. The meet will be held at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.

He will open competition on Friday, May 28 with qualifying for the javelin throw at 10 am followed by the high jump at 5 pm.

This season marks the fourth and final NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships appearance for Evans. The senior from Old Fort, N.C., placed 10th at the NCAA East Regional in 2008 after clearing a height of six feet and nine inches.

Evans' mark of 2.16 meters (7" 1') in the high jump ranked 12th in the East Region in 2010, while his toss of 66.80 meters (219" 1') was 21st in the region.

The senior has set two school records including the high jump with a height of seven feet and one inch. His javelin toss of 66.80 (219" 2') meters broke his previous school record of 66.45 meters (218" 8') at the Florida Relays in 2008.

Evans claimed Southern Conference Championship titles in both the high jump and javelin.

A new format will take place in this year's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. This weekend's meet will include multiple rounds spread out over three days. There are a total of 48 individuals in the East and West region that will compete for 16 spots. The top-16 will advance to the National Semifinal and have three more attempts. After the final three attempts, the top-12 from each region will advance to the NCAA National Finals in Eugene, Ore.
