Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University's Josh Lee and Leslie Martin from the men's and women's track and field teams have been selected as the Arby's/Catamount Student-Athletes of the Month for April.
Lee, a sophomore from Kannapolis, N.C., finished third in the javelin at Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational on April 3 with a conference-leading throw of 195-11. His mark tied a Western Carolina record at the time. Since Lee is also a tight end on Western Carolina's football squad, the Yellow Jacket meet was his first competition of the outdoor season. Lee also topped the competition and set a new school record in the men's javelin with a toss of 199-10 at Davidson's Irwin Belk Invitational on April 24.
Martin, a junior from Jonesville, Va., won the 800m at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Her time of 2:08.87 was both an NCAA Regional qualifying time and the fastest in the Southern Conference this outdoor season. She followed that performance up with a first place finish at the UNC Charlotte Invitational on April 11, coming in at 2:10.33. In that meet, Martin was additionally part of the 4x400 meter relay team which came in second with a season-best time of 3:46.67. Martin is an Art Education major and Dean's List honoree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.893.
