Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University's Laura Tieszen has been selected as this week's TIAA-CREF SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week. On her way to completing her junior year, Tieszen holds a 3.633 GPA while majoring in elementary education.

Tieszen, a star performer on the Catamounts' track and field team, won the pole vault event at last weekend's SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a SoCon record vault of 13'1.5", improving her NCAA Regional qualifying mark by four inches. The junior from Rapid City, S.D. (Stevens HS) also finished second in the javelin with a throw of 126'7". Tieszen was named this year's Women's Field Outstanding Performer at the meet.

This year's WCU Female Athlete of the Year, Tieszen has excelled throughout both indoor and outdoor seasons as she was additionally the pole vault champion at the SoCon Indoor meet in February. Altogether, she has won five pole vault titles between the two seasons, including both SoCon Championships.
