Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina head track and field coach Danny Williamson announced four new signees to the team today. Deanna Kulesz, Tammy Ulander, Morgan Hyatt and Damien Gunnel join early signee Ashley Marino of North Buncombe High School.
Kulesz (Oak Ridge, Tenn./Oak Ridge HS) is a distance runner who was an All-State performer in cross country and track. She finished in the top 20 at the 2001 Footlocker South Regional Cross Country Meet. Kulesz owns a personal best time of 11:20 for the 3200 meter run and 5:16 for the mile.
Ulander (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford HS) is a middle distance runner who was an All-State performer in the 800 meter run. She qualified for the state championships in cross country. Ulander finished third at the 2002 State Indoor Championships in the 500 meter run and 11th in the 1000 meter run.
Hyatt (Elizabethton, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett HS) participates in the throwing and weight events. She is the 2002 AAU National High School Indoor Champion in the shot put. Hyatt is also the reigning Tennessee AAU champion in the shot put. In addition to track and field, she is an All-State performer in volleyball.
Gunnell (Supply, N.C./West Brunswick HS) is a pole vault competitor. He won the 2002 Indoor State Championship in the event and had the highest vault in the state of North Carolina. Gunnell is currently ranked number one in the state with a vault of 15 feet.
"With these five athletes (including Marino), WCU will remain strong in all areas of our program," said Williamson. "The good thing about all of these signees is not only are they good athletes, but great students and quality people as well. We continue to recruit and expect several more quality students to choose WCU in the coming weeks."
