CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
SoCon Meet Schedule
Combined Progressions
The 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship is set to take place Saturday and Sunday on the campus of Western Carolina University at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C., with the first event to begin Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. The men's decathlon will kick off the event with the women's heptathlon beginning at 9:15 a.m. The WCU Track & Field / Cross Country Alumni reunion will also be held this weekend.
"We are very excited to be able to host the 2012 championship meet," said head coach Danny Williamson. "It will bring many to our beautiful campus between the participants, fans and the many WCU Track & Field / Cross Country alumni that have decided to return this weekend."
Western Carolina currently sits in second in both the men's and women's power rankings that were released today by the Southern Conference as rival Appalachian State sits atop both rankings. The Catamounts have six women and four men that have top marks in the conference in their respective events. WCU's Felisha Garren also looks to defend her 2011 SoCon outdoor title in the 400-meter. Garren also picked up a second place finish in the 200-meter dash in last year's meet en route to being named Most Outstanding Track Performer.
The Catamounts' men team won the 2012 SoCon Indoor Championship while the women placed second in the event.
"We come into this competition with the men's and women's teams with a chance to shake things up at the top of the team standings," continued Williamson. "It will not be an easy task as the conference is probably the deepest and toughest that it has ever been. Our goal, though, is to put ourselves in a position to have a chance to contend for the championship on a yearly basis."
The championship is free to the public with spectators encouraged to park in the softball parking lot for the event. Live results, recaps and photos can be found at CatamountSports.com.
