Western Carolina Track & Field Hosts 2008 Catamount Classic Friday in Cullowhee

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Track & Field teams will host the first of two consecutive meets this weekened when they welcome a contingent of four other schools for the 2008 Catamount Classic. The meet will take place on Friday, April 18, with the first field events beginning at 2:30 p.m., and concluding with the men's 4x400-meter relay on the starting blocks at 7:55 pm.

Admission on Friday is FREE to the public.

In addition to WCU, four other teams will be sending athletes to take part in the meet on Friday, including Gardner-Webb, USC Upstate, North Georgia, and Voorhees College. Gardner-Webb is a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, along with USC Upstate. Voorhees College is an NAIA institution out of Denmark, S.C. Western also welcomes the North Georgia Saints, who play in the Division II Peach Belt Conference.

The one-day meet is scheduled to run from 2:30 pm on Friday until approximately 8:00 pm. A full slate of events are on tap for the day, which will give all the participating athletes plenty of chances to either qualify or further improve the marks for their respective national and regional championships.

Next weekend, the Cats will be the host institution for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, April 26-27, at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Western, who won the SoCon Indoor Championships last March, will be hosting the event for the second time in three years, also seriving as host in 2005.

Also on tap for this weekend is the WCU High School Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, April 19 and feature some of the top high school athletes in the country. The action will be at the Catamount Athletic Complex, and will give fans a chance to get a first-hand look at the future of not only Western's track & field programs, but also of programs from around the nation.
