Spartanburg, S.C. - Western Carolina's Earl Rahming earned the Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, and Genevieve Emrick and Alisha Bradshaw picked SoCon Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors respectively as announced by the league office Thursday.
Rahming took first in the 400-meter run at the Beynon Catamount Classic over the weekend with a SoCon season-best time of 47.82. The senior also set a new personal record in the 200-meter (22.02) despite running into a -1.2 head wind. Rahming is also a member of WCU's SoCon-leading 4x100-meter (40.69) and 4x400-meter relay teams.
Rahming claims the award for the first time in his career and for the 24th time for WCU. He is the first male track & field athlete in the outdoor season honored and the first winner since Josey Weaver was named field athlete of the week on March 28, 2013.
Emrick won the 400-meter at the Benyon Catamount Classic with an all-time meet and facility record time of 54.31 to put her at the top of the SoCon list this season. She finished second in the 200-meter, finishing behind teammate Tayla Carter and clocking a 24.61. She also competed on WCU's winning 4x100-meter relay team.
Bradshaw took the title in the hammer throw (168-1), shot put (43-7 ½) and discus (149-4) at the Benyon Catamount Classic last weekend. Her discus throw set a new SoCon-leading mark and she is ranked second in the hammer and fifth in the shot put.
Emrick and Bradshaw are the second and third women's track & field members to recognized by the league's office with weekly honors this season - and 23rd time overall -- as teammate Tayla Carter was named outdoor track athlete of the week on March 26. Bradshaw picks her fourth outdoor female athlete of the week honors in her career, while Emrick earns the accolades for the first time in her Catamount career.
Western Carolina, the defending men's and women's outdoor SoCon champions, look to complete the season sweep of the track & field of the SoCon track & field championships at the 2014 SoCon Championship Meet on Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27 in Spartanburg. WCU won both indoor titles back on March 2 and March 3.
