Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina sprinter Zeb Johnson was named the Men's Outdoor Track and Field Performer of the Week by the Southern Conference today for his accomplishments on April 9 at the Clemson Invitational Outdoor Meet in Clemson, S.C.

Johnson becomes the third Catamount to earn the weekly honors from the SoCon, joining Laura Tieszen and Adam Puett who garnered the recognition in the first week of the outdoor season. Western's three selections during the outdoor season are the most by any conference school thus far.

A freshman from Charlotte, N.C., Johnson ran a lifetime personal best of 47.63 in the 400 meters at the Clemson Invitational. His performance was good for fifth place in a highly competitive field. Johnson also ran the lead leg of the Catamounts' 4x100-meter relay team that posted a time of 40.80 to finish third and the anchor leg for the 4x400-meter relay team that posted a time of 3:11.53. The latter was a WCU seasonal top-time by more than six seconds. All three times currently lead the Southern Conference Performance Rankings in their respective events.

Western's track & field teams will return to competition next weekend in split squad action. Team members will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Sea Ray Relays April 15-16, while other squad members will venture back to Clemson on Saturday.
