Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina senior Milton Bolton was today named the Southern Conference Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week by the league office. It marks the fourth-consecutive week a Catamount men's athlete has been tabbed for the award, sweeping each of the weekly honors thus far this season.
The award is Bolton's second this season, coupled with the first men's athlete of the week selected by the SoCon back on March 22. He was also named the conference's male track & field athlete of the month in March. The selection is the sixth for Western this outdoor season, including the four on the men's side and two by the women.
A native of East Point, Ga., Bolton improved upon his conference leading and regional qualifying time in the 400-meter dash by winning the event at the Clemson Invitational last Saturday. He turned a lap of 46.94, which was three-tenths of a second quicker than his previous top time of 47.23, ran in the season-opening Charlotte 49er Invitational.
In addition to leading the SoCon's 400-meter dash performance charts by nearly a full second over freshman teammate, Manteo Mitchell, Bolton also ranks fifth on the SoCon men's 200-meter dash performance charts behind four Catamount teammates with a time of 21.83. He also is a member of the conference-leading WCU men's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams. Bolton teamed with Kevin Johnson, Zeb Johnson, and Mike Malone to set a meet and school record, as well as qualify for regionals, at the Western Invitational passing the baton in 40.31. He also joined Johnson, Mitchell, and James Gregory in setting a league-leading time of 3:12.5 in the 1,600-meter relay.
Bolton and the Catamounts return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Sea Ray Relays, hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. Six of the Catamounts top outdoor performances from last season were recorded at the event.
