2007-08 Western Carolina Student-Athlete Awards
Cullowhee, N.C. - Coming off a strong performance at the Florida Relays this past weekend, Western Carolina swept the Southern Conference's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards, with senior Raquel Ramseur taking home the Women's Athlete of the Week honors, and sophomore Matt Evans being named the Men's Athlete of the Week. Both awards are chosen by the SoCon's track & field coaches.
The award is the second of the season for Evans, who shared the SoCon's weekly award with teammate Manteo Mitchell the week of March 27. Ramseur, who was the SoCon indoor and outdoor rookie of the year during her freshman campaign, has been honored during the week twice during the indoor season and now has two outdoor weekly honors over her four-year career. This is also the second time the Catamounts have swept the men's and women's awards this year, with Mitchell and Kerrie Savery taking home the dual honors back in February.
Ramseur, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., placed third in the 200-meters at the Florida Relays with a time of 23.43. Ramseur's time in the event places her in the top 10 in the nation, and makes her the first Catamount woman to qualify for the NCAA East Regionals this year.
In the first day of the meet, Ramseur also ran the 400-meter dash, finishing in a time of 54.67. It is the top time on the team this year, over one second better than the previous mark.
Ramseur is ranked first in the Southern Conference in the 200-meters, 400-meters, 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. She now holds the top-three times in the 200-meters on the squad this year, in addition to her top marks in the aforementioned events.
Evans, a sophomore from Old Fort, N.C., placed second in the invitational section of the javelin at the Florida Relays. He set a new school record for the second time this year, and improved on his NCAA regional qualifying mark with a toss of 218-8-feet. Evans' throw of 218-8-feet places him in the top 15 in the NCAA.
He placed seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 ¾-feet, his second meet this year with that mark. At the Charlotte 49er Classic earlier this season, he broke the WCU school record in the event, jumping 6-10 ¾-feet. Evans leads the Southern Conference in the javelin and high jump.
Both athletes will join their WCU teammates when they travel down to Clemson, S.C. this weekend to take part in the Solid Orange Classic meet, hosted by Clemson University. The one-day meet will take place all day on SAturday, April 18. Complete coverage of the meet will be available on CatamountSports.com.
