Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina track & field teams were awarded the weekly Southern Conference Track & Field honors this past week as Catamount junior Matt Evans and senior Manteo Mitchell were named Track & Field Athletes of the Week on March 26.
Mitchell, a senior from Mooresboro, N.C. picks up his third Southern Conference weekly award winning his second Outdoor weekly award this season. Also he was an indoor track athlete of the week award winner back on January 21. Junior Matt Evans picks up his third Southern Conference award this season, winning two SoCon Student Athlete of the Week awards, including this past week's award. This is Evans first player of the week honor for this season.
Mitchell was part of three first-place finishes and two NCAA Regional qualifying performances at the Mountains vs. the Beaches meet hosted by WCU. The Mooresboro, N.C., native won the 200-meter title with a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 20.73. The time was also a new Western Carolina University and facility record breaking former teammate Zeb Johnsons record from last season. The senior was also a part of the NCAA Regional qualifying 4x100-meter relay squad that clocked 40.24 and the winning 4x400-meter relay team.
Evans won both the high jump and the javelin at the Mountains vs. Beaches meet. Both of the junior's winning marks were NCAA Regional qualifying performances. In the high jump, Evans leaped 6-10.34 (2.10m) and in the javelin he threw 202-1 (61.60m).
Western Carolina outdoor track & field teams will return to action this weekend in a two day event that will conclude on Saturday in the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
