Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina track & field senior Lawrence Briscoe was today named the Southern Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week by the league office. Briscoe's selection is Western's third of the outdoor season and fourth between both indoor and outdoor. He joins sophomore Zeb Johnson, who earned athlete of the week during indoor season, and classmate Milton Bolton and sophomore Raquel Ramseur, both of which were the SoCon's outdoor track athletes of the week last week.
Briscoe turned in a SoCon leading time of 14.40, into a strong head wind, in the 110-meter High Hurdles at the Clemson Relays over the weekend, finishing third overall. The Charlotte, N.C., native also ran 55.05 in less than perfect conditions in the 400-meter hurdles to finish seventh, while also turning a 49.5 split in the 4x400-meter relay to help record Western's fourth-quickest time this season in the event.
In addition to leading the SoCon's 110-meter hurdles, Briscoe also rests atop the 400-meter hurdles time charts after running 54.36 at the outdoor season opening Charlotte 49er Classic.
Western Carolina ranks atop both of the most recent SoCon Power Rankings, leading rival Appalachian State on both sides. In the men's rankings, WCU leads the Mountaineers 277.55-to-218.35, while the women hold a 10-point edge, 176-to-166, over the Apps.
The Catamounts return to action this Friday and Saturday, hosting the Western Invitational at the on-campus Catamount Athletic Complex. This will mark the third-ever track & field event, including last year's SoCon outdoor championships, held at the new facility which was completed last spring. Entering the weekend, Western holds eight of the facility records, including eight on the men's side and five on the women's. The meet begins around 5:00 pm on Friday afternoon with four field events and will commence at 10:00 am on Saturday morning.
