Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina swept the Southern Conference track & field awards today as freshman Dominique Young garnered the men's weekly honor and junior Kerrie Savery was tabbed as the women's co-athlete of the week, sharing the award with Kristen Meister from Davidson.

The weekly honors were the first in the career of Young, who was dubbed the SoCon Men's Freshman of the Year during the indoor season. Savery was honored earlier this season as the TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week (Sept. 13) during cross country season. The accolades were also the second and third for WCU this spring, joining senior Asia Davis who earned last week's women's honor.

Young claimed the men's 200-meter dash event at last weekend's Wake Forest Open, just edging sophomore teammate Manteo Mitchell (21.22). The Charlotte, N.C., native's time of 21.22 was a USA Junior National Qualifying time and also currently leads the SoCon. He also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a conference-leading time of 10.67.

In addition to his individual performances, Young ran the third leg of WCU's 4x100-meter relay squad (41.12) and anchored the third-place 4x400-meter relay team (3:12.24) with a split time of 48.4. Both times by Western's relay teams last weekend currently lead the SoCon.

Savery ran a SoCon-leading time 2:11.38 in the 800-meters to finish seventh at the Wake Forest Open last weekend. The Port Charlotte, Fla., native additionally ran 4:43.22 in the 1,500-meter run, a time that ranks her third in the league. Savery also ran a 56.9 split on the WCU women's 4x400-meter relay team, which finished third out of 27 teams.

The Catamount Track & Field hosts the Western Carolina Invitational this Saturday, March 31 at the Catamount Athletic Complex on-campus in Cullowhee.
