Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina landed a league-best 20 student-athletes on the Southern Conference TIAA-CREF Winter Academic All-Conference Team as announced by the conference office today. Nine members of the women's indoor track & field team were recognized, with the regular season champion Lady Catamount basketball team and men's indoor track & field squad each tallying five and men's basketball rounding out the selections with one.

Western's 20 honorees is just one shy of the 21 student-athletes that were named to the academic honorary squad during the fall semester. WCU led the SoCon, followed by Appalachian State with 18 and Davidson with 13.

A total of 118 student-athletes, who averaged a 3.59 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, representing all Southern Conference institutions and associate member VMI, were named to the winter team. Overall, the men's and women's indoor track & field squads combined for 76 student-athletes on the academic team, with women's basketball adding 26.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring of 2007 and have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the winter.

This is the fourth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. The all-academic teams are made possible by a grant from the Southern Conference's Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
